I just finished Dead Space today and I really, really enjoyed it.  So far it is my pick for Game of the Year, although there's some stiff competition still to be released.

Dead Space does alot of things right.  It is really scary and has perfect timing. I'm not sure how they did it, but with the lighting, sound, and gore it really gets your heart pumping and then even the silence is unnerving because you never know when something's going to pop out of a vent and try to rip your limbs off.

The graphics are great and I really like how they got rid of all HUD elements; everything's contextual. Your health is shown on your environmental suit and your ammo is displayed on your weapon. It allows you to slip deeper into the world and forget that your playing a game.

The story is very interesting and keeps you involved with the characters and trying to understand what is happening and how you are going to get out of your current situation. I watch the animated version of the comic book for free on Xbox Live and I am looking forward to the animated feature film that is coming out next week.  I think it is great that they have provided all this extra “fluff” for the fans to immerse themselves in the world of Dead Space.

I had a great time playing it.  I always tried to play it at night, but couldn't wait near the end and ended up playing during the day, which diminishes some of the scares, but was still entertaining.  It is only single player and it doesn't have much replayability so I already sold my copy on eBay, but I recommend checking out if your looking for a good scary shooter.
