DESCRIPTION:  Yi-Ling Yu was born to an impoverished family in rural China, during the years of China’s One Child policy. Her father, wanting a son, placed her in a basket and set her afloat in a nearby river so that he and his wife could try again.

Yi-Ling was among a fortunate few that survived abandonment. Her little basket caught in some brambles along the river bank bordering the property of a small, clandestine temple. The monks of the temple had spent years, secretly adopting the abandoned girls of the neighboring countryside. The monks of the temple were deliberate and cautious in the keeping of their secrecy, knowing that if they were discovered, the girls would surely be taken away, and their fates could be too terrible to contemplate. It was common practice for corrupt politicians to run brothels by enslaving the multitudes of abandoned girls.

As a consequence, the girls were raised in the shadows, and stealth became a way of life for them. The monks education of them did not end with the arts of stealth, however. The monks themselves studied the martial arts, but thought that such training would be inappropriate for young girls. Instead, the girls were trained in acrobatics, the only other discipline that could hone the mind and body that the monks had to offer.

Yi-Ling, of course, was one of the most gifted students. She quickly outgrew the temple, and yearned for the outside world. Knowing that her fate would be one of servitude in China, she secretly left the country and began to travel the world, earning her way by using her skills as a thief. The adrenaline rush of the heist was her drug.

Normal targets such as banks and private residences became too easy for her, so she upped the ante, and began to break into the hideouts of heroes and villains. Her luck ran out on a heist within the headquarters of the villain known as Toxin. Enraged that someone would dare defile his lair, Toxin decided to make an example of Yu-Ling. He tortured her for weeks. Every day, he would inject her with corrosive liquids or poisons, not enough to kill her, but enough to make her writhe in agony and despair.

Toxin’s efforts proved to be his undoing. His diabolical corrosives and poisons began to affect Yu-Ling, strangely. Her body had begun to develop an immunity to them by incorporating them into her very cell structure. Incensed that his methods were no longer inducing the appropriate amount of pain, he created his most powerful acid ever, one guaranteed to either kill her, or make her wish she was dead.

The results were not what he expected. Yu-Ling underwent a transformation, from that of a normal human, to a creature made of living acid. She took her revenge upon him, and enveloped him within the horror of what he had created. When she was done, there was nothing left of him.

Outwardly, her appearance had not changed. She was still a beautiful young woman. Inwardly, however, she had been scarred and disfigured beyond recognition. The effects of the poisoning and acids had forced her body to adapt, to evolve into something capable of surviving. Her physical prowess increased beyond that of normal humans, becoming stronger, more agile, and more durable than any human could ever hope to achieve.

Believing that her capture by Toxin was a fluke, and that her new abilities were a gift, she became fanatical about becoming the greatest thief in history. She is now obsessed with completing successful heists from super heroes and villains.
