What’s On Your Holiday Wish List

There are so many RPG books, novels, comics, video games, DVDs, etc. competing for your holiday dollars. Usually I just end up buying everything when it comes out and my wife always complains she has nothing to buy me. So this year I'm holdin' back (sort of) and just putting everything on my wish list.

What items are on your wish list? Leave a comment below.

The Buzz: Left 4 Dead Opening Cinematic

Here is the opening cinematic for the upcoming game Left 4 Dead and all I can say is "WOW!" The quality and cinematic quality of this is amazing. I was also watching some of the gameplay footage and it is INTENSE. The only thing I worry about is team killing and friendly fire; with that many zombies piling all over you it will be very easy to kill your friends. Anyway take a look at the video and let me know what you think.

November’s Hot Video Games

Gear of War 2 - Xbox 360 -Nov 7, 2008
I loved the first Gears of War, but for some reason, I'm not overly excited about this.  I guess it is because there are so many other games that I am looking forward to more, but I will still play it.

Tom Clancy's Endwar - Xbox 360, PS3 - Nov 4, 2008
This title is pretty cool because of the fact you can control the entire game with your voice. I first thought that there was no way I could play a game and that it was just a gimmick, but it actually works very well. I did pretty good against the computer, but when I played an actual human over Live, I got my rear handed to me.

Call of Duty: World at War - Xbox 360, PS3 - Nov 11, 2008
Once again, I have played almost every version of Call of Duty and it still so amazing, but it is getting to the point for me that Call of Duty is getting plopped out with almost as much consistency as an EA sports title. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but just more of the same.

World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King - PC, MAC - Nov 13, 2008
I couldn't leave this behemoth off the list, now could I?

Mirror's Edge - Xbox 360, PS3, PC - Nov 11, 2008
I think you can tell, I'm already excited about this game and is the only must buy on release day that is on this list.

Left 4 Dead - Xbox 360, PC - Nov 18, 2008
Zombies and Valve... you just can't go wrong with this combination.

Prince of Persia - Xbox 360, PS3 - Dec 2, 2008
I know this game doesn't come out till December, but it's the only game I like releasing that month, so now I'm off the hook to do a December video game post ;-)

There's tons more games that I didn't list, so if there's anything your looking forward to, leave a comment below.

The Buzz: Mirror’s Edge

I have heard of this game for a while and honestly wasn't very excited about it. I thought the graphics looked bland, gameplay too simple, and overall not very exciting. Well, they released a demo for Mirror's Edge on the 360 yesterday and after I played it I can honestly say that this is one of the most fun games I have played and I can't wait for it.

The graphics are simple and the color mostly white and grey, but that actually makes for a really interesting gameplay element, because red objects point out a possible path for you to take. So after playing it, they graphics are really quite beautiful and the motion is so smooth, it really feels like you are doing it.

The gameplay is amazing and it is actually really fun. I found myself trying it over and over just to make it one smooth continuous motion, maybe that's a little OCD, but it was fun ;-) . It has that Prince of Persia feel to it, where you are jumping up ledges and running along walls, but does it so much better and feels more fluid. I think it may be due to the first person perspective and how you only see your arms and legs. I also like how it handles confrontation. Usually most games have you do an puzzle/acrobatic section, then a fight section, well in Mirror's Edge when you encounter a confrontation you have to figure out how to use the acrobatics to escape. If you are faced with an opponent you can't pass, your character deftly disarms them and disposes of the weapon. It is really cool and lots of fun.

So if you have a moment give the demo a try, it is quite amazing. Click below to see a video.

New Alan Wake Trailer

I have been waiting forever for this game and today we got a new trailer after an extremely long absence of communication about the game.  It still looks great but they still haven't announce a date or anything else related to the game. Take a look at the most recent trailer.

October Video Game Releases

The Fall video game extravaganza has begun and here are some of my picks for this month's interesting video game releases. What games are you looking forward to?

The Sting: Braid XBLA

I recently downloaded the new Xbox Live Arcade game, Braid and wanted to post my initial thoughts on this thought provoking game.

First of all let me tell you that I absolutely love this little game. I'm not even halfway done yet and I have been blown over by the unique mind bending gameplay. This game brings such a fresh game mechanic that makes you rethink how you view time, very similiar to how Portal made you rethink space. You are constantly having to juggle platforming, rewinding time, and understand how to bend time to your will. The puzzles are devilishly clever and you will jump for joy when you finally figure out a puzzle that has been vexing you.

The graphics are dreamy and evoke a watercolored look like the movie "What Dreams May Come" with Robin Williams.

Overall I highly recommend this game, although the $15 price is a little more than I was expecting. At least give the free demo a try first and I'm sure it will hook you like it did me.
