Are D&D Essential Classes Really Simpler?
Today we got our first look at the Cleric from the upcoming D&D Essentials product line. The build presented is a Warpriest, a divine leader that gets up close and personal with the enemies.
The impression I got from the new D&D Essentials line of products is that they will be simple and back to the basics. I read through the article, but it doesn’t really look simpler to me, in fact maybe even more complicated as they are adding a “domain” system. Clerics choose from the “storm domain” or the “sun domain” and depending on their choice, get different class features and powers. It is very interesting and I would still like to see more of the powers associated with the domains, otherwise is seems just like a new class “build”
Check out the article over here and let me know what you think. Are they simpler, more complicated, or pretty much the same?

I though at first they were making the character easier, but after the warpriest example I’ve come to the (tentative) conclusion that they are making the character creation process easier. My impression of the article is that the choice of the class, sub-class and (at least for clerics) domain would auto-select powers and possibly even feats (that could be changed but would have preset defaults). This would make it easier for a new player to jump into the game, a step up from pre-gens but not the initial complexity of building a character from scratch.

Thanks Khyron, now that makes perfect sense. I didn’t realize that the powers would be “auto-selected”. So it’s similar to the current builds where it “suggests” certain powers and feats, but would allow you to jump in and have everything you need without being bombarded by choices. But of course you could still go in a tweak things. Nice!
